Impacts of climate change, population growth, and power sector decarbonization on urban building energy use

Operational building energy use accounts for 30% of global final energy consumption and 26% of global energy-related direct and indirect emissions. In a recent study conducted by international researchers, including those from HKU, the effects of climate change, population growth, and decarbonization in the power sector on urban building energy consumption were examined. The study revealed that under higher warming scenarios, the increase in the frequency of urban summer peak building electricity energy use intensity in certain cities could exceed 110%. The implications of these findings are significant for the development of sustainable and resilient urban energy systems, particularly in the context of climate change and the decarbonization of the power sector.
